Christmas Drawstring Bags
Here’s another variation of Christmas bags to put small gifts inside.  This one has a drawstring and it's made out of Christmas cotton fabric.  It’s not lined on the inside, which makes it really simple to make.  Just follow these instructions and you can have one to personalize any gift you give this holiday season.  There are all kinds of cute Christmas material in the fabric stores right now.  Some are even 50% off which makes it even better!  Hope you enjoy.

Cut two pieces of fabric.  For this bag I cut 8” X 10”.

Put right sides together and sew the bottom and up the sides about 6 inches.  The top portion will not be sewn.

At the top where you stopped sewing, snip the sides up to the seam.  Do not cut over the seam.

Using an iron, fold in the top sides to the point where the seam starts.  Iron this on all 4 sides.

Press down the top on both sides.

Fold the top over to the point where the side seams start and iron in place.  This is what it will look like after you have finished pressing the top on both sides.

Next, we need to make the casing to put the ribbon through.  Sew a seam across the bottom top. Make sure you catch the seam you ironed down.

Then sew across the top.  You can leave however much space you want at the top so the top will look ruffled once gathered.  Just make sure your casing is wide enough to slide the ribbon through.

Use the pinking shears to cut the seams.  The pinking shears will keep the material from raveling.  This is important since the bag is not lined.

Cut two pieces of ribbon approximately 21” long and put a safety pin at the end of the first string.

Use the pin to guide the ribbon through the casing.  When you get to the end of one side, keep going through the other side of the bag as shown until it comes out the other end.

Put the safety pin in the second ribbon and start on the opposite end of the bag and pull the ribbon through.  Make sure the first ribbon stays in place.  This ribbon will come out on the opposite end of the bag.

Tie both ends in a knot.

Pull on the strings to gather the top of the bag to close the bag.  Now isn’t that cute!  And it didn’t take hardly any time to make!  Yay!

You can make these bags all year around for birthdays or any occasion!  They are also great for holding gift cards.  Check out these other bags.
